布鲁塞尔自由大学位于比利时王国首都布鲁塞尔，目前共拥有9000名学生，600名教授，800名科学研究人员，900名行政及后勤工作人员。其下设的大学医学院有4500名工作人员。

布鲁塞尔自由大学成立于1970年（由原法语区布鲁塞尔大学中独立而出），是一所拥有特殊理念（如：自由质询）的弗拉芒区(荷兰语区)大学。虽然在思想和哲学领域与ULB仍有一定的联系，但VUB如今已是一所完全独立的大学。ULB与VUB在比利时大学中各自有不同的位置。关于“自由质询”的基本理解就可以说明这种情况。我们可以毫不夸张的说，布鲁塞尔自由大学是一所开放的多元化的大学，它面向所有尊重VUB教育和社会理解的人开放，不管他具有怎样的宗教信仰和哲学观。
